Heat and Frost Insulators Local 8 Business Manager Terry Burke joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act (FMIA), which was introduced into the U.S. House earlier this month.

Local 8 represents about 160 members in Cincinnati.

If passed, the bill would amend the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) to require that energy insulation audits include the proper installation of mechanical insulation, Burke said. The law would also require the mechanical insulation to be installed by somebody trained and certified by an approved apprenticeship program, he added. Burke talked about the importance of mechanical insulation and how the law would improve safety and energy efficiency.

Burke also spoke about efforts to grow the Local by 10 percent in the next year and how its endorsed candidates faired in the November election.
