Director of United Auto Workers District 2B, David Green, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the makeup of the District. Green also talked about the recent contract negotiations in the district and how the International is preparing locals for the electric battery transitions.

District 2B represents over 160,000 retired and active members. The District covers Ohio and Indiana and is made up of 120 different UAW Local Unions. Within the Locals there are a total of 320 different bargaining units. It’s Green’s goal to ensure all 320 bargaining units get their fair share after years of conceding benefits to their employers.

Green also discussed the Clarios strike, which has finally reached its conclusion with a new contract after over six weeks on the picket line. The strike began due to an impasse in negotiations, and continued for so long due to the employer’s unwillingness to negotiate, Green said. He also discussed the unallocated GM plant in Lordstown which saw many UAW members lose their jobs. There is still a labor dispute against GM, as the UAW believes that by using the term “unallocating the plant” instead of closing the plant, GM was able to avoid contract requirements owed to workers.

As the automotive industry continues to switch to electric vehicles, UAW and District 2B are preparing their members for the transition to EV battery production to support the industry. There are several safety issues that members and the UAW are concerned with when it comes to battery production. The most significant issue involves the chemicals involved with the production. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has yet to establish regulations for the chemicals. As plants continue their switch, ensuring workers are protected and aware of potential hazards is Green’s main goal.
