Emily Twarog, Associate Professor of History and Labor Studies at the University of Illinois School of Labor and Employment Relations, Labor Education Program (LEP), joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss women's leadership in labor unions and her research on sexual harassment in the workplace.

Twarog shared her journey into labor activism, which began during her time as a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She would go on to serve as president of the United Auto Workers Local 2322, where she led efforts to negotiate for better wages and affordable childcare for graduate employees. Twarog said that experience solidified her belief in the power of collective action and the importance of the labor movement.

The Regina V. Polk School for Women's Labor Leadership, co-directed by Twarog, aims to develop more women leaders in the workforce. The program combines practical skills training with a focus on wellness and networking. Twarog emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for women to develop leadership skills and build solidarity within their unions. Twarog said the school's success is evident in the achievements of its graduates, many of whom have gone on to become Local Union presidents, join executive committees and run for office.

Twarog's current research focuses on reframing sexual harassment in workplaces as a health and safety issue. She said creating safe workplaces, free from harassment, is essential for worker productivity and well-being. Twarog's approach emphasizes prevention and intervention strategies, aiming to change workplace behavior and culture. Her work with the United Association on a three-hour training program showcased the practical application of this research in creating safer work environments.
