Dorsey Hager, the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building Construction and Trades Council joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the recent visit by North American Building and Trades Union President Sean McGarvey to Columbus to discuss the growth and opportunities in the area.

NABTU President Sean McGarvey kicked off a nationwide tour in Columbus, featuring the work done by C/CO BCTC affiliated unions. This tour is called Meeting the Moment, and features cities with opportunities for underrepresented communities to get involved with the building trades. Hager reiterated the great opportunities McGarvey discussed, including the Building Futures apprenticeship readiness program and the large number of projects coming to the Central Ohio area.

Hager also shared updates on the projects coming to the Central Ohio region including that the new phase with Facebook will be underway shortly. Joining Facebook’s new build phase will be the new Intel plant, the Honda EV battery plant and at least six more major projects beginning work in the next 18 months. Currently, the Central Ohio area has 15,000 building trades members at work. Over the next 18 months, there will be a need for over 15,000 more members to handle all the construction work in the area Hager added.

Finally, Hager discussed various legislation the C/CO BCTC will oppose. Along with the legislation, the C/CO BCTC has endorsed candidates in the upcoming election cycles, including the Council’s former legal counsel who is running for a seat on the Columbus City School Board, Hager said.
