Manja Horner, CEO of Boost, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss enhancing union leadership and productivity through effective communication, identifying and developing leadership within unions and the role of Boost, a company dedicated to improving performance in skilled trades and unions, in supporting union growth.

Horner emphasized that communication is often at the heart of workplace issues, particularly in unions. She noted that misunderstandings and frustrations frequently arise from poor communication, which can hinder productivity and morale. Horner highlighted the need for leaders to develop strong listening skills and to foster an environment where open dialogue is encouraged. This is especially crucial in managing intergenerational differences, as younger workers may not respond well to traditional authoritative communication styles. Horner said by improving communication, unions can enhance collaboration and resolve conflicts more effectively.

Identifying potential leaders within unions is crucial for their growth and sustainability, Horner said. She explained that natural leaders often step up without being asked, demonstrating initiative and the ability to bring people together. She advised looking for individuals who exhibit strong problem-solving skills, reliability and a willingness to mentor others. Horner said these qualities are essential for leadership roles, as they help maintain a cohesive and motivated workforce. She also stressed the importance of providing training and development opportunities to nurture these emerging leaders, ensuring they are equipped to handle the unique challenges of union leadership.

Finally, Horner discussed how Boost supports unions by creating learning ecosystems that enhance performance and productivity. Horner described how Boost works with various unions, including the IBEW and IUOE, to address specific challenges at the Local level. The company provides tailored solutions that include training, technology integration and knowledge management. By focusing on these areas, Horner said they help unions streamline operations, reduce costs and improve member engagement.
