The America’s Work Force Union Podcast welcomed Matt Biggs, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers President, who discussed the challenges and strategies unions face in protecting their members in the midst of political change.

The IFPTE represents a diverse range of professionals and technical engineers. Roughly one-third of the union’s 90,000 members are federal employees.

Biggs spoke about the union, and how it must navigate through a politically charged environment, particularly with the anticipated challenges from the incoming Presidential administration. He highlighted the looming threat of executive orders aimed at undermining federal unions and employees. Biggs said the union is ready to challenge such measures legally and legislatively, underscoring the importance of coalition-building with other unions to strengthen their defense.

Communication, he said, is important. Biggs stressed the need for members to stay informed and engaged, highlighting the importance of political advocacy and building alliances with labor-friendly lawmakers. Members should remain vigilant and be prepared to counteract any attempts to erode workers' rights, he said.

He also discussed the IFPTE’s proactive approach to organizing and growing its membership, even in challenging times. By focusing on sectors like nonprofits and energy, IFPTE aims to expand its influence and support for workers across various industries.

Listen to the full episode to hear more from Biggs about how the IFPTE plans to navigate the upcoming political change and the tactics it will use to protect its members.
