Buffenbarger discusses So-Called “Right to Work” laws and defense cuts

Tom Buffenbarger, former International President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to share his insights on So-Called “Right to Work” legislation and the impact of Department of Defense cuts on workers.

Buffenbarger highlighted the ongoing battle against So-Called “Right to Work” laws, which have resurfaced in Congress but were recently defeated in New Hampshire. He emphasized the importance of union solidarity in combating these laws, which he views as an attack on worker rights. Buffenbarger praised the efforts of Local Unions and representatives who stood against the legislation, noting that their success in New Hampshire serves as a model for other states. He stressed that the fight against So-Called “Right to Work” is crucial for maintaining union strength and protecting workers from corporate interests that seek to undermine organized labor.

The discussion then shifted to the significant cuts in the DOD. Buffenbarger said the cuts are detrimental to national security and thousands of workers' livelihoods. He expressed concern over the layoffs of probationary employees and the potential degradation of military readiness. Buffenbarger called for a reevaluation of priorities, urging policymakers to recognize the essential role of these workers in maintaining national security.

Buffenbarger also addressed the broader political climate, expressing frustration with the current administration's policies that he believes are harmful to workers’ rights. He criticized the influence of billionaires and corporate interests in shaping legislation that favors the wealthy at the expense of working families. Buffenbarger urged union members and the public to stay informed and active in resisting policies that threaten worker rights.
