Deborah Chunn, Market Development Representative for the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss her journey in the roofing industry, overcoming challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field, her efforts to recruit diverse workers and her role in promoting union membership.

Chunn's path to the roofing industry was unconventional. After running a daycare center that failed due to economic challenges, she explored construction as a career option. Despite initial skepticism about women in roofing, Chunn persevered, completing her apprenticeship and becoming a journeyman in 2014. She faced isolation and skepticism from male colleagues but remained determined to succeed, using their doubts as motivation to excel in her work.

In her current role, Chunn focuses on recruiting new union members, particularly from underrepresented groups. She conducts outreach at career fairs, prisons and re-entry programs, emphasizing the opportunities available in the roofing trade. Chunn's efforts extend to converting non-union companies to union shops, a challenging task that requires strong communication skills and persistence. According to Chunn, her background has equipped her with the tools to connect with diverse groups.

Chunn is also actively involved in promoting gender equity in the trades. She participates in the Illinois AFL-CIO's Gender Equity in the Trades initiatives and serves on the planning committee for Tradeswomen Takeover Springfield. Chunn emphasizes the importance of women supporting each other in the industry and the empowering experience of attending events like North America’s Building Trades Unions’ Tradeswomen Build Nations, where thousands of women in various trades come together annually.
