Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association (FEA), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the ongoing teacher shortage, which has become more evident through increased class sizes. He also discussed new school security requirements that make it more difficult for parents and students to leave school grounds and spoke about five publishing companies that are suing the state for its book-banning policies.

Spar continued past discussions regarding a lack of teachers in Florida schools. With the new school year starting, class sizes have continued to increase beyond the size requirements written in the Florida Constitution. Spar explained why this is happening and what state lawmakers have done to eliminate the penalties for violating the class size requirements.

Florida has instituted stricter security measures around schools this year, but it has not created the impact many hoped for, Spar said. He talked about the new restrictions that have made it difficult for parents who are trying to check out their students for doctor’s appointments. Spar also spoke about an incident where school buses were unable to leave school grounds thanks to the new security measures.

Finally, in response to the campaigns by several conservative organizations to ban books from Florida schools, four national publishing companies have sued the state. Spar discussed the potential ramifications of the suit, including how it could return banned books to school shelves.
