Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for the American Legion, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the June edition of The American Legion Magazine, which includes stories about the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary, manufacturing's return to America and issues with VA claims processing.

The magazine's cover story celebrates the Army's semi-quincentennial, exploring its rich history and impact on American society. Stoffer shared personal stories from veterans about why they chose to serve, ranging from family traditions to post-9/11 patriotism. Stoffer said the article also highlights the Army's contributions to technological advancements, including engineering innovations, medical breakthroughs and even everyday items like Pringles and Ray-Bans.

Next, Stoffer discussed the magazine's feature on manufacturing's potential resurgence in the United States. With significant investment in domestic manufacturing, particularly in industries like electric vehicles and semiconductors, the landscape is changing, he said. Modern factories are more automated and technologically advanced, requiring a different skill set from workers. According to the article, there is a need for 3.8 million additional manufacturing positions by 2033, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the U.S. workforce.

Finally, Stoffer discussed his concerns with VA claims processing. Nearly half of the claims filed contain errors, often due to problems with medical examinations conducted by third-party contractors. He added that these issues lead to delays and denials, potentially impacting veterans' access to benefits. Stoffer said the Legion is advocating for increased oversight and improved training to streamline the claims process and ensure veterans receive timely, accurate assessments.
