Today’s episode of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast featured Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications at the American Legion. Stoffer discussed the Legion’s advocacy during government shutdowns, efforts to combat scams targeting veterans, and the inspiring journey of a veteran-turned-entrepreneur – a feature story in the December issue of the American Legion Magazine.
Stoffer began by discussing the impact of the recent government shutdown and the American Legion’s response. He outlined how the organization advocated for uninterrupted pay for military personnel and highlighted the hardships endured by some veterans who rely on government services. The Legion’s grassroots action prompted thousands of members to send messages to Congress in support of solutions to prevent future shutdowns. Local Legion Posts also stepped up, organizing food drives and other forms of assistance to affected government workers. This reflects the organization’s dedication to serving military families and veterans, regardless of the challenges posed by political gridlock, Stoffer said.
Next, Stoffer focused on veteran-targeted scams, especially prevalent during the holiday season. With so many charitable solicitations happening, veterans and older adults are prime targets for fraudulent robocalls and deceptive fundraising schemes. Stoffer emphasized the importance of caution when responding to unfamiliar organizations and highlighted state-level legal efforts to prosecute scammers in places like Massachusetts and Georgia. He encouraged donors to research unfamiliar charities and reassured listeners that donating via the American Legion and its partner organizations is a safe way to support veterans.
Finally, Stoffer discussed a showcase of inspirational veteran stories and community events, specifically the journey of Nick Palmisciano from Army officer to successful entrepreneur. Palmischano’s story, featured in the December issue of American Legion Magazine, highlights the potential of veterans when they bet on themselves and invest in their communities. Additionally, Stoffer previewed the annual Army-Navy Game, highlighting its role in fostering camaraderie among veterans and American Legion members nationwide. Through watch parties and support for military academy graduates, the Legion utilizes these traditions to champion unity, service and ongoing support for those who serve.
