America’s Work Force Union Podcast welcomed back Fred Redmond, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, who discussed the challenges and opportunities facing organized labor as the country prepares for a new administration.

Reflecting on the election, Redmond acknowledged the disappointment felt by many in the labor movement but highlighted the strong member-to-member labor program that saw union members voting overwhelmingly for labor-endorsed candidates. Despite these efforts, the overall turnout was insufficient to sway the election. Redmond reaffirmed the AFL-CIO's commitment to working with allies and standing firm against policies that undermine workers' rights.

Looking ahead, Redmond expressed cautious optimism regarding the appointment of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as U.S. Labor Secretary. Her support for the Protect the Right to Organize Act has raised hopes that she may advocate for workers' rights within the administration. However, Redmond emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly in light of the broader agenda outlined in Project 2025, which poses potential risks to labor rights.

Redmond also previewed the AFL-CIO's plans for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day conference in Texas. The event aims to energize and mobilize trade union activists across the country, focusing on strategies to defend workers' rights under the new administration. By drawing inspiration from Dr. King's legacy, the conference seeks to unite and empower participants in their ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Listen to the full episode to hear more from Redmond about the AFL-CIO's strategies for navigating the challenges ahead and how the labor movement plans to defend workers' rights in the coming years.
