Everett Kelley, National President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the recent attacks on federal workers, AFGE's membership growth and the importance of Black History Month.

Kelley expressed deep concern over the unprecedented mass firings of federal employees, calling them "reckless" and part of a broader agenda to privatize government services. He highlighted the impact on agencies like the Veterans Administration, where about 1,000 probationary employees were terminated without cause. Kelley warned that these actions could lead to mission failure in critical government services, opening the door for private contractors to take over at a higher cost to taxpayers.

Despite the challenges, AFGE has seen remarkable membership growth, reaching its goal of 325,000 members 11 months ahead of schedule. Kelley attributed this surge to the current administration's actions, noting that over 8,000 new members joined in a single week. He emphasized that federal employees remain dedicated to serving the American people, even through adversity. Kelley stressed the importance of maintaining a strong, experienced workforce to ensure quality government services.

Reflecting on Black History Month, Kelley discussed the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality in the workplace. He expressed concern over recent attempts to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs and restrict celebrations of Black history in federal agencies. Kelley drew parallels between current challenges and past civil rights struggles, emphasizing the need to continue fighting for progress and equal opportunities for all Americans.
