AFGE discuss strategy to counter potential threats to federal workers

On this Thanksgiving edition of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Arnold Scott, National Vice President of American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) District 6 (covering Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio), discussed the potential challenges for federal workers under the incoming presidential administration. As the political landscape shifts, Scott expressed concerns about possible cuts to the federal workforce and the impact on public services.

He highlighted the significant threat posed by proposals to drastically reduce federal spending and privatize many government functions. This approach could lead to severe cuts in essential programs such as Social Security, Medicare and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Scott emphasized that such measures would not only jeopardize the livelihood of federal employees but also diminish the quality of services relied upon by millions of Americans.

There is a disparity in spending between federal employees and contractors as $750 billion is allocated to contractors compared to $200 billion for federal workers. He argued that prioritizing contractors over federal employees undermines the merit-based system and could lead to inefficiencies and increased costs to taxpayers. Scott stressed the importance of maintaining a strong federal workforce to ensure effective and accountable public service.

Looking ahead, he outlined the AFGE's strategy to counter these potential challenges, which includes building alliances with lawmakers across party lines, particularly in states where federal jobs are crucial to local economies. By fostering these relationships, the union aims to protect federal workers' rights and ensure the continuation of vital public services.
