President for the Alliance of American Manufacturing, Scott Paul, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about the potential repeal of the Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China and potential issues with corporations. Paul also talked about the 2023 Made In America Holiday Gift Guide.

The U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has recently called for a repeal of the Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China that has been in place since 1980. This repeal would mean tariffs would no longer be set at the lowest level. It would then allow Congress to set the tariffs higher on certain goods. With the overwhelming trade discrepancy between China and the United States, this could be a way to prevent product dumping and provide greater revenue to the U.S. government.

Paul discussed the need to reset many strategic trade relations and improve tariffs. Like the North American Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, fixing the tariff issues would create a better trade balance. A large sticking point in the trade relationship between China and the United States is the large corporations based in the United States that are directly tied to the Chinese market. Paul said that companies like Apple and Walmart are linked to the current trade relationship and would likely battle any changes to the current system.

The AAM has released its 2023 Made In America Holiday Gift Guide in preparation for the holiday season. The Alliance conducted polling through a third-party company over the years and discovered that consumers in America desire Made In America products. Online retailers are not required to list the country of origin for a product, whereas it is required to be on products in physical stores. The Alliance ensures a platform for companies to promote their Made In America products, support the American jobs they create, and cover all 50 states.
