America's Work Force Union Podcast

USW sees some benefits in virtual training for members

Written by awfblog | September 25, 2020

United Steelworkers Director of Education Lisa Jordan joined host Ed “Flash” Ferenc on the Sept. 25 edition of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the benefits of virtual training.

There is no argument that the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected the way unions conduct business, especially their training methods. With social distancing and other safety mandates being implemented it has made in-person training impossible.

Jordan explained that the USW had to adjust to the new normal and put their training resources on their website. Members are able to receive various types of training, such as leadership, officer or diversity training courses all on the internet. She said this makes it safer for members to go through their training while also making the best of the current situation.

Jordan added that another benefit of virtual training is that it is there for everyone to see. It does not matter what part of the country you may be in, the training videos are accessible as long as the member has internet connection.

Jordan said the online training has helped the USW provide training materials for locals who may not have had adequate funding to provide specific training.

While in person training is missed, the online training provided by the United Steelworkers is incredibly thorough and helpful for locals and members across the United States.

Lastly, Jordan addressed USW members and who they are interested in voting for in the 2020 presidential election.
