USW leadership stresses the importance of the union member vote

Written by awfblog | October 28, 2022

United Steelworkers (USW) District 1 Assistant Director Teresa Cassady joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed efforts by USW leadership to get out the vote ahead of the midterm elections and encourage the membership to participate in the political process.

District 1 represents steelworkers in Ohio and Michigan.

Since the beginning of the year, the USW has held town hall meetings inside each Local Union to discuss core values within the organization and how those relate to the candidates and issues on the ballot, Cassady said. It is more important the candidates reflect those values than represent any particular political party, she added.

Cassady then talked about the door-to-door campaign efforts USW members have made to get the word out to their fellow members.

She also shared her memories of the lockout at the Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. in which 1,050 USW members were forced off the job in Findlay, Ohio in 2011.
