Lowell Glodowski, President and Business Manager of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 Washington and Alaska, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the Level Up Campaign, an initiative launched in 2018 to get more younger people, minorities and women into the Union.

Local 1 represents about 1,100 members in western Washington and Alaska and has roughly 225 apprentices, Glodowski said.

When the campaign first began, the average age of an apprentice was between 33- and 35- years- old. About 26 percent were minority and 1 percent were women. Now the average apprenticeship age is 28, 33 percent are minorities and 7 percent are women. He talked about the value of mentorship in improving recruitment for women and minorities.

Glodowski also discussed the workload of his membership, which continues to be strong in both Washington and Alaska. He also spoke of the Union’s success at bringing non-union members into the fold, averaging about 10 to 15 new organized members every month.
