Southeastern North Carolina Central Labor Council President Herb Harton joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed what he described as “runaway inequality” in the modern economy, and how unions offer a solution by providing workers a pathway to the middle class.
Harton talked about the history of unions and how they built the middle class in America. However, in the last 30 years, Wall Street has derailed the union mission and instituted rampant inequality, he said. He warned against stock buyback programs and suggested they be made illegal because they are a form of stock market manipulation.
Harton also spoke about the need to pass voting rights legislation to ensure minorities continue to have a political voice.
Lastly, he discussed the challenges of union organizing in North Carolina, a So-Called “Right to Work” state. He emphasized the need to pass the Richard Trumka PRO Act to ensure workers throughout the nation have a right to organize.
