Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 760 Business Agent Joe Chittam joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed why members of Local 760 travel for work outside of Alabama.
Chittam said that many of his members work all across the country, taking advantage of projects with Ford, Toyota, General Motors and the construction of numerous pharmaceutical plants. Many of these workers own mobile trailers, which helps control living expenses on the road, he added.
Chittam also talked about the challenges of organizing in Alabama, a So-Called “Right to Work” state. He explained how his members tend to make $5 an hour more than non-union workers, and are entitled to healthcare and retirement benefits.
