Bill Benner, Director of Organizing and Political Action for United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 75, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the opportunities to organize in the medical cannabis industry and why the rights of cannabis workers need to be protected.
Local 75 represents 30,000 workers in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
UFCW Local 75 recently won a historic union election and secured the first contract for workers at Sunnyside, a medical marijuana dispensary in Cincinnati, Benner said. He talked about the need to advocate for and protect workers' rights, plus the organizing potential of the legal cannabis industry.
Benner also spoke about the threat automation poses to grocery and retail workers and organizing drives for Half Price Books.
