The strike began in response to the newspaper's management, which has been accused of violating federal labor laws. Despite the challenges of the extended strike, the workers have continued to produce a strike publication, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to their cause. Schleuss emphasized the importance of solidarity and the need for continued support from the community and fellow union members.
Finally, Schleuss discussed the NewsGuild's success in securing 44 first contracts in 2024, a record achievement for the organization. These contracts span various workplaces, from non-profit newsrooms to major publications like the Chicago Tribune and the Atlantic. Schleuss attributed this success to the increased willingness of workers to organize and demand better conditions, a trend he believes will continue in 2025 despite the current political climate.
