Union challenges for labor under the new Trump Administration

Written by awfblog | February 5, 2025

Jon Schleuss, President of The NewsGuild-Communication Workers of America, joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the impact of recent changes to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the ongoing strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the impressive number of first contracts secured by The NewsGuild in 2024.

The first topic of discussion was the significant changes to the NLRB under the Trump administration. Schleuss highlighted the challenges posed by the firing of key figures like Jennifer Abruzzo and Gwen Wilcox, which has effectively stalled the board's operations. This directly impacts workers' rights, Schleuss said, as the NLRB is the only federal agency dedicated to protecting private sector employees. Despite these setbacks, he remains optimistic about the potential for increased organizing efforts, drawing parallels to the pre-NLRB era when massive strikes were common.

Next, Schleuss addressed the ongoing strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which has persisted since October 2022. The strike began in response to the newspaper's management, which has been accused of violating federal labor laws. Despite the challenges of the extended strike, the workers have continued to produce a strike publication, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to their cause. Schleuss emphasized the importance of solidarity and the need for continued support from the community and fellow union members.

Finally, Schleuss discussed the NewsGuild's success in securing 44 first contracts in 2024, a record achievement for the organization. These contracts span various workplaces, from non-profit newsrooms to major publications like the Chicago Tribune and the Atlantic. Schleuss attributed this success to the increased willingness of workers to organize and demand better conditions, a trend he believes will continue in 2025 despite the current political climate.
