UAW Local 2300 approves new contract at Cornell University

Written by awfblog | September 10, 2024

Christine Johnson, President of the United Auto Workers Local 2300, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a new contract for members at Cornell University. She talked about the outpouring of support members received and what the contract will mean for these workers and others with contracts set to expire this year.

In late April, Johnson said they began some initial negotiations before returning to the bargaining table in earnest in June. She talked about the differences during the negotiations this year compared to past contracts. Johnson said the members were trying to avoid a strike, but after the university walked away from negotiations in late August, they had no choice.

Cornell returned to the table after the strike and an outpouring of support from students and other faculty. After another week, the bargaining committee for Local 2300 made progress on several sticking points to earn the new contract their members deserved. Johnson discussed the sticking points that caused the most problems during bargaining. Workers approved the new contract with a 77 percent approval vote when presented with the tentative agreement.

By the end of the new contract in 2028, every bargaining unit member will be at the highest wage level. Johnson also talked about establishing benefits that will ensure members can make their jobs a career. Finally, she discussed the next steps for Local 2300 as there are five more bargaining units with contract negotiations this year.
