U.S. Ports see an influx of funding at state and federal levels

Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss funding announcements at the state and federal level to help modernize and improve port operations across the country.

Recently, the Biden Administration announced $3 billion in grants for ports. Regan said the grants will update clean energy and modernize operations nationwide. Not only will they assist with port modernization, but they will also create several hundred thousand jobs.

The ports need to be modernized, and many need repairs. One such repair is the rebuilding of the bridge over Baltimore Harbor. Regan discussed the project's progress and his expectations for the remaining timeline.

Finally, Regan discussed the funding that California Gov. Gavin Newsome recently announced to improve the Long Beach and Los Angeles ports, among several other ports in the state. The Long Beach and Los Angeles Port systems have been ranked as the least efficient in the world, and this funding is meant to fix that. Regan explained what the funding could do to assist with the efficiency issues and why it should not hurt the speed of the port operations.
