To combat this, a coalition of 30 Local Unions, representing 15,000 workers, has united to draft and introduce a bill to the General Assembly. This collective effort aims to secure dedicated funding for mass transit, highlighting the critical role of public transportation for those who cannot afford personal vehicles.
Federal decisions, particularly the elimination of the Federal Mediation Conciliation Service, have created additional challenges for public sector unions in Illinois. Drea explained that this service was crucial for small Local Unions and government units to negotiate without resorting to costly strikes. The absence of this free mediation service now forces unions to seek expensive alternatives, potentially increasing the financial burden on smaller communities.
Union solidarity has become more vital than ever in Illinois, as evidenced by the increased activism and participation in legislative advocacy. Drea noted that labor lobby days have grown in size and enthusiasm, reflecting a united front in Springfield. The collaboration with the University of Illinois Labor Education Program has further equipped union members to effectively communicate their stories and needs to lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of elections and informed advocacy in achieving positive outcomes for workers.
