Fred Redmond, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the past two years since he and President Liz Shuler were elected to lead the AFL-CIO. Redmond also discussed the union’s Legislative Scorecard and a new weekly labor news roundup.
On June 12, 2022, Shuler and Redmond were elected to lead the AFL-CIO. In doing so, Shuler became the organization's first female president, and Redmond became the first African American to become Secretary-Treasurer. Redmond reflected on the historic election and how the past two years have gone for the duo and the labor movement.
Redmond discussed his conversations with labor leaders around the country, and how the cohesiveness and union growth have been displayed at each stop. More workers are responding to the discussions the AFL-CIO is having, including conversations about the potential impact the November election could have on workers. Redmond talked about the education campaigns by the AFL-CIO, including the Legislative Scorecard. This online database shows the voting history of all U.S. Representatives and Senators so workers can know which policymakers have their best interests in mind.
