Pat Gallagher, President of the North Coast Area Labor Federation, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss their canvassing campaign as the November election approaches and the engagement from Local affiliates. He also discussed Cleveland-Cliffs’ acquisition attempt of Stelco.
The North Coast Area Labor Federation — a Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO based near Cleveland — utilizes multiple methods in its canvassing campaign to educate union members on proper election procedures. Gallagher said the campaigns are directed at certain populations of union members at specific time frames throughout the day to make their efforts more effective.
Gallagher discussed the reception of the canvassing efforts from union members, which he said has been promising. He also shared his excitement about the engagement from Local affiliates to get members ready to vote by educating them on the facts about the candidates and helping them create a plan for how they want to vote.
Finally, Gallagher, a retired member of the United Steelworkers, discussed Cleveland-Cliffs' attempt to acquire Stelco, the former steel company of Canada. He said the purchase had been delayed due to the waiting period required under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976. This waiting period has ended, and Gallagher has said that the acquisition process is moving forward.
