J.D. Thompson, Executive Vice President for the Communication Workers of America Local 2001, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed ongoing contract negotiations with Frontier Communications. Thompson also addressed fiber expansion in the area and his thoughts on the potential of a strike.
The members of CWA Local 2001 received promising news over the weekend, as their current Collective Bargaining Agreement with Frontier Communications was extended until Aug. 19. Over the past few weeks, there was little movement on small points in the new CBA, but movement was made on the major points, Thompson said. He explained that Frontier has made it clear they want to offshore as much work as possible in order to save on operating costs and they also want to contract out the installation work and positions. Not only is the job security of indoor call center workers in jeopardy, but also the job security of the outdoor workers as well, Thompson said.
In June, President Biden announced that as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, there will be an expansion of high-speed internet access nationwide. This announcement means nearly 8.5 million families will gain access to high-speed internet for the first time. To do this will require many experienced, well-trained installers, and it is something that Thompson believes he and his fellow CWA members are ready and able to handle.
At this point, he is unsure about the future of CBA talks, as there has not been enough movement to make him feel comfortable. The Local held a strike vote, where an overwhelming majority of members voted to strike. The members are ready to fight for a fair contract and will use the strike to prove that point, if needed, Thompson added.
