Hannah Halbert, Executive Director of Policy Matters Ohio, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the recently released annual State of Working Ohio report. She discussed the difference between the positive data on paper, the reality for many of Ohio’s working people and the union difference.
The annual report showed wage growth, low unemployment and a record number of jobs. However, Halbert said many improvements haven't been enough to move the dial on economic security. However, wages across all workers in Ohio grew, which is something Halbert said was much needed for the lower 20 percent of workers.
While this was one of the best years seen for the report, Halbert said, it did not create the best situation for workers. She talked about how inflation negatively impacted working people in Ohio and how the job market needs help from policymakers so working people can share in the wealth they are creating.
Finally, Halbert discussed the union difference, evident throughout the annual report. According to the report, there was a 16 percent difference in wages earned between those working in a union and those working non-union. The union difference provided an average of $7,780 per year more to members working a full-time position in Ohio in 2023.
