Written by awfblog | July 18, 2025

Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for the American Legion, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the organization's centennial baseball tournament, the USA 250 Challenge and the Legion's impact on communities nationwide.

The American Legion celebrated 100 years of its baseball program with the Centennial Classic tournament in Milbank, S.D. This four-team event showcased the program's commitment to teaching values and sportsmanship. Stoffer said that Milbank is known as the birthplace of American Legion baseball, and it has embraced its history with pride, demonstrating how small-town posts can make a significant impact. The tournament highlighted the Legion's dedication to youth development through sports.

The USA 250 Challenge, initiated by National Commander James LaCoursiere Jr., aims to raise funds for the Veterans and Children's Foundation. Participants can engage in fitness activities, wellness initiatives like suicide prevention training or community service projects. Stoffer said the challenge encourages members to complete 250 of their chosen activities, with proceeds supporting veteran disability claim assistance and emergency grants for military families.

Finally, Stoffer highlighted the Legion's substantial impact across various areas. In 2024, accredited service officers obtained $21 billion in disability benefits for veterans. Stoffer said the Legion was the nation's largest single organizational blood donor, distributed over $10.7 million in national emergency fund grants, conducted over 1,100 job fairs and recently awarded a record $1.6 million in Legacy Scholarships. He said the figures showcase the Legion's wide-ranging efforts in supporting veterans, youth and communities across America.
