Dante Woodson, an International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 705 member, and Nicholas Coronado, union attorney, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the ongoing strike at Mouser Packaging Solutions in Chicago. They highlighted unsafe working conditions, the company's anti-union tactics and the fight for immigration protection language in their contract.
A relatively new employee, Woodson described alarming workplace conditions, including exposure to harmful chemicals and inadequate ventilation. He discussed the lack of respect shown to workers and the need for basic safety measures. Coronado elaborated on the company's anti-union behavior, including surveillance of union activities and attempts to undermine worker representation.
The strike, which has been going on since June 9, stems from the company's refusal to address key issues in contract negotiations. Coronado highlighted the union's push for immigration protection language, requiring judicial warrants for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement interventions at the workplace. Despite this measure not costing the company anything, Mouser has refused to include it, raising concerns about their commitment to worker safety and rights.
The situation has escalated with Mouser announcing plans to close the plant by Nov. 21, unless an agreement is reached. Coronado expressed skepticism about the company's willingness to negotiate in good faith, noting their contradictory messages at the bargaining table. The union remains committed to striking until a fair contract is secured or the plant closes.
