America's Work Force Union Podcast

Teamsters seeing major victories in waste industry despite challenges

Written by awfblog | June 2, 2025

Chuck Stiles, Assistant Director of the Solid Waste and Recycling Division for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss recent organizing victories, contract negotiations and some of the ongoing challenges in the waste management industry.

The Teamsters achieved multiple organizing victories with Lakeshore Recycling Services (LRS), following a neutrality agreement that allows workers to decide on unionization without company interference. Stiles said this approach has resulted in five successful organizing campaigns, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative labor-management relations. He discussed how this strategy benefits workers and shareholders, creating a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Stiles then discussed negotiations with Waste Management, which he said have improved significantly under the leadership of Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien. The company has recognized the union's enhanced strike fund and willingness to take action, leading to better contracts and more empowered members, he said. Stiles noted the shift in approach could be beneficial as workers seek to regain ground lost during the pandemic.

Finally, Republic Services remains a significant challenge for the Teamsters, with Stiles describing the company as "incompetent" and prone to taking "the cheap route." He shared some of the ongoing issues, including allegations of illegal toxic waste discharge and union-busting tactics. Stiles expressed concern over Republic's ownership structure, noting that nearly a third of the company is owned by Bill Gates' investment firm, which he believes is “hypocritical” given Gates' public image.
