Tariffs, Community and Worker Advocacy with USW District 1 Director

Donnie Blatt, District 1 Director for the United Steelworkers (USW), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the USW Constitutional Convention, the impact of tariffs on the steel industry and the union's community outreach efforts.

The USW Constitutional Convention, held April 7 through 10 in Las Vegas, served as a democratic platform for delegates to voice their concerns and influence union policies. Blatt explained that the convention allowed Locals to submit resolutions on various issues, which were then reviewed by committees. The process ensures that the union remains responsive to its members' needs and adapts to changing industry dynamics, he said.

Next, Blatt addressed the complexities of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. While targeted tariffs aimed at curbing unfair trade practices were initially welcomed, the blanket tariffs on allies like Canada created significant challenges. Blatt said the tariffs have impacted supply chains and affected industries reliant on cross-border trade, such as automotive and paper mills. Blatt talked about the need for a more nuanced approach to trade policies that simultaneously protect domestic jobs without harming international partnerships.

In addition to industry issues, Blatt highlighted the USW's commitment to community service through initiatives like "Forever Our Children," founded by union member Robert Ford. This nonprofit organization provides essential services, including food banks and a mobile shower bus for the homeless. Blatt praised Ford's efforts and encouraged Locals to support such initiatives, demonstrating the union's dedication to giving back to the communities where its members live and work.
