Boilermakers Local 154 Business Agent Shawn Steffee joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the need to invest in a variety of energy forms in order to keep up with society’s energy appetite in a way that is environmentally sustainable.
Steffee said fossil fuels will continue to play a role in the energy sector, especially as carbon capture technology is implemented. Carbon capture technology isolates carbon dioxide created through the use of traditional fossil fuels and then redistributes the captured molecules to underground storage or to be used in fertilizer, he explained.
He then talked about the importance of hydrogen fuel and nuclear energy in maintaining a robust energy infrastructure.
Steffee also discussed Local 154’s apprenticeship program and the need to train apprentices to maintain a variety of energy systems.
