State and local AFL-CIOs discuss nominees for Ohio elections in 2024

Written by awfblog | November 16, 2023

President of the North Shore Area Labor Federation, Pat Gallagher, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about the confrontation in the U.S. Senate this week, a meeting between Ohio’s local AFL-CIO Federations and he shared stories of his time with the late United Steelworker President, Tom Conway.

Gallagher talked about some of the odd interactions he’s had with opponents of the labor movement. This is part of ongoing conversations following a confrontation between U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and Teamsters President Sean O’Brien in a senate hearing earlier this week. Gallagher said he’d never seen something like that occur publicly but congratulated President O’Brien for keeping his professionalism during the event.

Ohio AFL-CIO’s leader Tim Burga has scheduled a meeting with all the labor federations in Ohio to discuss 2024’s plan for election support. The primary discussion is likely to revolve around the reelection of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. Gallagher discussed the show of solidarity during Ohio’s recent election and why he expects 2024 to be better.

Gallagher also shared his experiences and remembrance of the late Steelworkers President Tom Conway. He remembers Conway fondly and reflected on his passion for helping to secure a safe and beneficial future for his members and the labor movement. Gallagher shared stories from his time working with Conway and the Steelworkers negotiations he participated in with Conway and how Conway strategized and always executed those strategies with near perfection each time.
