Sonya Bohmann, Executive Director of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the organization's mission, available resources and the importance of destigmatizing mental health conversations in the workplace.

Founded in 2018, the CIASP, aims to provide resources and information for suicide prevention and mental health promotion in the construction industry. Bohmann emphasized the industry's alarmingly high suicide rate, which is four to five times that of the general population. The organization offers a range of tools on its website, including toolbox talks, leadership resources and a needs analysis for organizations to assess their mental health support systems.

Bohmann discussed the gradual shift in attitudes toward mental health in the construction industry. While stigma still exists, more companies and unions are actively engaging in conversations about mental health and implementing year-round programs. The organization's resources, including the STAND Up Pledge and upcoming Pathway Tool, help companies build comprehensive mental health support systems. Bohmann also highlighted the importance of making mental health resources accessible to all levels of the workforce, from craft workers to leadership.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has become a crucial resource in suicide prevention efforts. Bohmann said the lifeline has received millions of calls and offers support in over 250 languages. It provides anonymous, 24/7 assistance not only for individuals in crisis but also for those concerned about someone else's well-being. The service's ability to connect callers with local crisis centers and, when necessary, trained first responders, makes it a valuable tool in addressing mental health emergencies in the construction industry.
