Social Security privacy ruling a victory for retirees

Rich Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a federal court decision temporarily halting the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) access to sensitive Social Security data and the staffing and service issues at the Social Security Administration. He also outlined the Alliance's nationwide efforts to protect retirees' benefits.

A federal judge in Baltimore issued a preliminary injunction against DOGE, preventing it from accessing Social Security records without restrictions. Fiesta said the decision underscores the importance of privacy, as these records contain sensitive financial and medical information. Fiesta called the ruling a victory for American workers and retirees, reinforcing the Social Security Administration’s longstanding commitment to protecting personal data. The injunction remains in place pending further developments, with the possibility of an appeal by the government.

The Social Security Administration continues to suffer from understaffing, leading to long wait times and service delays. Fiesta said the agency currently has the lowest number of staff in its history while trying to serve the highest number of beneficiaries. According to Fiesta, this has resulted in significant challenges for those seeking assistance, with some wait times reported to be over four hours. Fiesta said the Alliance continues to advocate for increased resources and staffing to ensure that the agency can provide the level of service that American workers have funded through their contributions.

Finally, Fiesta discussed the Alliance’s efforts to mobilize its members nationwide to protect Social Security benefits. He described recent nationwide activism efforts, including a National Day of Social Security Activism, where members engaged with lawmakers and participated in events to raise awareness. The Alliance is also working to oppose the confirmation of a new Social Security commissioner who has ties to DOGE. Fiesta said the new Commissioner should be someone who prioritizes the protection of retirees' benefits.
