Keith Lounsbery, President of the Michigan State Employees Association and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 5, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the negative impact of So-Called “Right to Work Laws” on public unions in Michigan.

MSEA/AFSCME Local 5 has approximately 4,500 members.

Since Michigan became a So-Called “Right to Work” state in 2013, it has been difficult for public sector unions, including Local 5 bargaining units. He is concerned people do not understand the adverse long-term effects So-Called “Right to Work” laws will have on the financial stability of individual homes and families.

Lounsbery also touched on his efforts to grow Local 5’s membership through the implementation of new divisions of the union to encourage the use of distinct skill sets among members. Local 5 now encompasses a labor and trades unit and a public safety division.
