Palmer said public-sector jobs have served as a buffer against private-sector discrimination. The erosion of these jobs, Palmer explained, could disproportionately harm people of color, stripping away opportunities for financial security and advancement.
In Chicago, SEIU Local 73 members are in a dispute with the city over contract ratification for public safety workers. Despite negotiating wage increases in 2024, workers still operate on 2022 wages, causing frustration and financial strain. She discussed what has happened with the city to prevent the public safety workers' contract from being implemented and how Local 73 is working to resolve the issue with the city.
Palmer also addressed the national landscape, where federal actions threaten public-sector employment. She noted the importance of educating the public about the value of these jobs and the consequences of political decisions. For example, in Illinois, unions are rallying to protect workers' rights, drawing lessons from past events in Wisconsin to prevent similar outcomes.
