SAG-AFTRA’s Sarah Elmaleh on AI, wages and safety in video games

Sarah Elmaleh, Chair of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee for SAG-AFTRA, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the union’s recent contract negotiations with major video game studios.

Elmaleh highlighted the critical issues of artificial intelligence (AI) in gaming, wage increases to combat inflation and improved safety measures for performers. The new contract, ratified by over 95 percent of SAG-AFTRA members, addresses the growing concern of AI in the gaming industry, she said. Elmaleh emphasized the importance of protecting performers’ rights as AI technology advances, noting that the union spent nearly a year negotiating AI-related protections. This focus on AI safeguards demonstrates the union’s commitment to adapting to technological changes while ensuring fair treatment for its members, she added.

Wage increases were another significant victory in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Elmaleh explained that the CBA provides compounded increases in performer compensation at a rate of over 15 percent, with an additional three percent increase in subsequent years. These raises, she noted, are crucial for keeping pace with inflation and maintaining performers’ buying power. The agreement also includes improvements to overtime rates and increases contributions to health and retirement funds, further enhancing the overall compensation package for SAG-AFTRA members in the gaming industry.

Safety measures for performers, particularly those involved in motion capture and stunt work, were also addressed in negotiations. Elmaleh highlighted the introduction of mandatory breaks per hour for performers doing repetitive or physically demanding work. Additionally, the contract now requires a set medic to be present during hazardous stunt performances, addressing a critical safety concern previously overlooked in the industry.
