He stressed that union workers' extensive training and empowerment to report safety issues make them ideal for such complex projects. The project is expected to create numerous construction jobs, though specific numbers weren't available. Pollock noted that the timeline for completion is feasible, citing recent large-scale projects in Texas that were completed efficiently by skilled union labor. He also touched on the broader issue of workforce shortages in the construction industry, with Texas projecting a deficit of 10,000 construction workers annually for the next decade. Pollock advocated for greater involvement of actual workers in discussions about workforce development initiatives to address these shortages effectively.
Pollock expressed concerns about recent challenges facing the industry, including the impact of immigration crackdowns on the workforce and budget cuts affecting renewable energy projects. He highlighted the cancellation of the Solar for All program, which would have provided significant work opportunities for union members in the renewable energy sector. Despite these setbacks, Pollock remains committed to advocating for union involvement across all energy sectors, emphasizing the need for an "all of the above" approach to meet Texas's energy needs.
