Rhode Island Charter School Paves Path for Youths to Union Careers

Written by awfblog | September 29, 2025

Lindsey Tavares, Executive Director of the Apprenticeship Exploration School in Rhode Island, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss their unique charter high school model. Tavares highlighted the school's direct pathway to union apprenticeships, its impact on underserved communities and the ongoing renovation project to enhance its facilities.

The Apprenticeship Exploration School, a tuition-free public charter high school, equips students with direct pathways into union apprenticeship programs, particularly with the Laborers' International Union of North America. Tavares explained that all students in the construction program are registered as LIUNA pre-apprentices, with the curriculum deliberately built to connect directly to union apprenticeships and careers. This model has proven successful, with a high percentage of graduates entering the workforce immediately upon completion.

Tavares shared a compelling story of a recent graduate named Juan, which illustrated the school's commitment to supporting students facing significant challenges. She explained that Juan, despite having caregiver responsibilities and facing financial pressures, was able to graduate and enter the apprenticeship program with the school's support. This example, she said, underscores the school's dedication to addressing the needs of underserved populations and providing opportunities for economic mobility.

The school is currently undergoing a $14 million renovation project, supported by a city bond and union involvement. Tavares highlighted the unique "wall-breaking" ceremony that kicked off the project, allowing current students and alumni to participate in the demolition process. She said this renovation will expand the school's capacity and enhance its facilities, reflecting the growing demand for career and technical education programs.
