Replaced by technology, DFAS employees retrain for new positions

American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 3283 Executive Vice President Laurie Glicker joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed how technology brought in to automate financial transactions in the Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS) has forced members of her Local to retrain for new positions as the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) increasingly relies on payroll automation technology.

Local 3283 represents about 700 DFAS-Cleveland bargaining unit employees. DFAS manages the financial operations of the DOD.

Fortunately, Glicker said no employees have lost their jobs due to the technology, but 64 members are being retrained for other positions. She described the challenges faced by the members who are forced to make the transition, as some have worked in their positions for over 30 years.

Glicker also spoke about a change in federal policy that will affect federal employees who telework. They are now required to come into the office two days per pay period.
