AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the need to get out the labor vote for next week’s mid-term elections.

Redmond detailed the efforts by unions canvassing for votes. He called this election an attack on the social contract and decried Republican efforts to cut Social Security and Medicare. Elections have serious consequences, and people need to understand what’s at stake, he added.

Discussion then turned to the attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Redmond condemned the attack and said he was alarmed by the ridicule and jokes made by some members of the Republican Party regarding the attack.

Redmond also talked about the efforts of the AFL-CIO to help members of the labor movement run for political office. He estimated that close to 300 union members have been elected to federal, state and local offices thanks to help from the AFL-CIO.
