Secretary-Treasurer for the AFL-CIO, Fred Redmond, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to remember the late President of the United Steelworkers, Tom Conway. Redmond also talked about a report released by the AFL-CIO on former president Trump and the budget issues in Congress.
Redmond shared memories of his good friend and long-time Steelworker brother, Tom Conway. Conway and Redmond came up together with the Steelworkers as staff representatives. After Redmond's election, Conway introduced Redmond as the Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO. He discussed the impact Conway had on the Steelworkers and the labor movement as a whole.
Redmond continued by discussing the lack of support unions received during former President Donald Trump’s tenure. Redmond referenced several points and previous actions that show the lack of union support from the former president. The AFL-CIO is ready to set the record straight about the support unions have received. He continued by discussing the report released by the AFL-CIO that outlines legislation passed by the Trump administration to take away worker protections.
With another possible government funding shutdown on the horizon later this year, Redmond talked about the issues with the budget that remain. Several budget cuts will reduce and eliminate different government bodies. The AFL-CIO is trying to put a human face on the people impacted by a shutdown. Redmond believes this will be a fight and hopes there is a positive light at the end of the battle.
