Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, Fred Redmond, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) conference he’s attending in Uruguay. Redmond discussed the lessons shared during the conference and the importance of nations working together to advance the global labor movement.
Recently, Redmond has been working with labor groups to ensure all workers are protected from employee exploitation. The week-long conference in Uruguay includes members from the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas and the ITUC to discuss labor in the South American region. Redmond discussed the conference’s goals and the discussions on the global labor movement.
Redmond shared some lessons he learned during his international labor work. He used a recent example of an Argentinian leader actively working to undermine unions in the country. Redmond talked about the legislation their new government passed that hopes to disbar worker's unions.
Redmond also talked about the solidarity shown by the representatives from the 36 countries attending the conference. The importance of the global future of labor relies on governments' ability to work together to advance the labor movement. In South America, the issues faced by unions can impact all nations. If the nations cannot work together, there will be a problem for all union members, he said.
