America's Work Force Union Podcast

the 2025 Dirty Dozen with National COSH Executive Director

Written by awfblog | May 9, 2025

Jessica Martinez, Executive Director of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the statistics of workplace injuries and fatalities, the annual release of the 2025 Dirty Dozen report highlighting negligent employers and the greater challenges faced by immigrant workers in hazardous industries.

Martinez began by highlighting the grim reality of workplace safety, noting that in 2023 alone, over 5,283 workers died from traumatic events on the job, equating to one death every 99 minutes. She said these figures only scratch the surface, as many incidents go unreported, particularly among immigrant workers who fear deportation. Martinez added that workplace safety issues have a disproportionate impact on Black and Latino workers, who suffer higher rates of workplace fatalities. She stressed the need for comprehensive safety measures and the enforcement of existing regulations to protect all workers, regardless of their background.

Next, Martinez discussed the Dirty Dozen report, an annual list compiled by National COSH that names employers with “egregious” safety violations. Martinez explained the nomination process, which involves input from a network of grassroots organizations, unions and worker centers. The report aims to hold negligent companies accountable and encourage them to improve safety standards. This year's list includes companies with severe violations, such as preventable deaths and injuries, highlighting the urgent need for action and reform in workplace safety practices.

Finally, Martinez addressed the challenges faced by immigrant workers, who often endure the most dangerous and undervalued jobs. She pointed out that these workers are frequently subjected to unsafe conditions without adequate training or protective equipment. Martinez discussed the role advocacy and public pressure can play in driving change, as many immigrant workers fear retaliation and deportation if they speak out. She called for stronger protections and support for these vulnerable workers to uphold their safety and rights.
