The National President of the National Treasury Employees Union, Tony Reardon, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and spoke about the Internal Revenue Service and how it is set to grow thanks to passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
Since 2010, the IRS has lost nearly 20 percent of its workforce, Reardon said. The employee reduction coincided with a sharp decline in funding.
With the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law, the IRS is now poised for growth. However, Reardon believes Republicans are set on changing the IRS and they are going about it incorrectly. House Republicans recently passed a bill to rescind the IRS funding increase. Besides repealing the funding, their legislation would also create a 30 percent national sales tax. Reardon then gave his thought on the bill’s future in the Senate.
He also discussed a proposed pay raise for federal employees and compared it to raises in the private sector for those who do the same job. While he personally accepts the proposed 8.7 percent pay raise, he detailed the wage disparity between private sector and federal employees.
