Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss rail safety regulations, challenges in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Infrastructure Week.

Regan began by discussing the lack of progress in rail safety regulations, despite ongoing concerns following incidents like the East Palestine, Ohio derailment. He discussed the need for legislative action to address safety issues, including crew size and inspection standards. Regan believes maintaining and enhancing safety standards will be crucial for the industry's future, even as some groups push to further deregulate the industry.

Next, Regan discussed the FAA's ongoing challenges, particularly the need to modernize the air traffic control system. Regan pointed out that while there is momentum for change, significant investment and legislative support are required to overhaul the outdated system. He talked about the importance of recruiting and training new air traffic controllers to address current shortages, rather than relying on temporary measures like raising the retirement age.

Finally, as we approach the middle of Infrastructure Week, Regan underscored the importance of predictable and reliable funding for infrastructure projects. He advocated for building on the bipartisan infrastructure law to ensure long-term improvements. Regan added that he believes consistent funding will be essential for incentivizing business participation and enabling communities to plan effectively for future projects.
