Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the rollbacks of rail safety regulations, the elimination of advisory committees and the launch of new high-speed trains in the U.S.
Regan expressed deep concern over the Trump administration's efforts to weaken rail safety rules, despite recent high-profile derailments like the one in East Palestine, Ohio. He highlighted that many of these regulations were implemented due to past accidents and are crucial for maintaining safety standards. Regan said the administration's push to waive inspections for rail cars and tracks, along with the irresponsible use of technology, is moving in the opposite direction of what's needed to enhance safety in the rail industry.
Another troubling development is the elimination of safety advisory boards and committees. These groups, which include representatives from unions, employers and suppliers, provide valuable input to regulatory bodies. Regan emphasized the importance of having a voice at the table and expressed uncertainty about the future of these committees, including the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee, which was suspended.
On a positive note, Regan discussed the launch of new high-speed trains at Union Station, built by union workers in Hornell, New York. These Acela train sets, capable of speeds up to 160 mph, represent a significant step forward for U.S. rail transportation. Regan believes that as more people experience these high-quality, convenient trains, demand for similar services across the country will increase, potentially spurring economic growth and revitalizing American manufacturing in the rail sector.
